Practice Words (Tap to Hear):
zv

Mabhi eMuridzo: ZV

Voiced Whistling Sibilant (zv)
👄 Mouth & Tongue Tip: Same rounded lips as "sv", but hum with your vocal cords like a buzzing "z". One of the most iconic sounds in Shona!

tsv / dzv

TSV ne DZV

Whistling Affricates (tsv, dzv)
👄 Mouth & Tongue Tip: Start with a crisp "t" or "d" and release directly into the rounded whistling "sv" or "zv".
Practice Words (Tap to Hear):
b vs bh

B ( nyoro ) ne BH ( rine mhepo )

Soft Implosive B vs. Explosive BH
👄 Mouth & Tongue Tip: Plain "b" in Shona (like Baba) is a gentle inward pop of the lips without a puff of air. "bh" (like Bhazi) is the strong English "b" with a burst of air.
Practice Words (Tap to Hear):
d vs dh

D ( nyoro ) ne DH ( rine mhepo )

Soft Implosive D vs. Explosive DH
👄 Mouth & Tongue Tip: Plain "d" (like Dovi or Duri) is drawn gently inward at the roof of the mouth. "dh" (like Dhongi) pushes air outward like English "d".
Practice Words (Tap to Hear):
v vs vh

V ( pakati pemiromo ) ne VH

Soft Bilabial V vs. Dental VH
👄 Mouth & Tongue Tip: Plain "v" (like Vana or Mvura) is made softly between both lips without biting your bottom lip (almost between "v" and "w"). "vh" (like Vhiri) bites the lower lip like English "v".
Practice Words (Tap to Hear):
mh / nh

MH ne NH ( Mhepo muMhuno )

Breathy Nasals (mh, nh)
👄 Mouth & Tongue Tip: Hum "m" or "n" through your nose and release a warm sigh of breath ("h") at the same time—never separate them into two syllables.
Practice Words (Tap to Hear):
mb / nd / nz

MB, ND, NZ, NG

Prenasalised Consonants
👄 Mouth & Tongue Tip: Even at the start of a word (like Mbira, Ndapota, Nzou), hum the nasal sound briefly right before releasing the consonant as a single smooth beat.
Practice Words (Tap to Hear):
n' vs ng

N' ( se 'sing-er' ) ne NG ( se 'finger' )

Velar Nasal N' vs. Hard NG
👄 Mouth & Tongue Tip: With an apostrophe (n'ombe), pronounce a soft nasal like the 'ng' in 'singer' without a hard 'g'. Without an apostrophe (ngoma), include the hard 'g' like 'finger'.
Practice Words (Tap to Hear):
ny / sh / ch / mw

NY, SH, CH, MW

Palatal & Labial-Velar Blends
👄 Mouth & Tongue Tip: "ny" sounds like Spanish "ñ" in canyon (Nyika). "mw" blends lips and soft palate together in one motion (Mwana).
